Advanced Diploma of Naturopathic Practice

This is our largest course offering as it includes everything from both the Nutrition and Herbal Medicine qualifications, plus a foundation in using Homoeopathy.

As a full Naturopath, you will be able to use a wide range of techniques to help your clients.

Duration

This course is designed to be completed over a three year period based on approximately 15 hours of study per week. You can, however, complete more quickly than this if you want to.

The size and structure of this course makes it suitable for those who have decided they intend to be a naturopath, and who are able to devote more time to their studies. However, this course is also sometimes chosen by those who do not yet know which field they prefer and therefore want exposure to nutrition, herbal medicine and homoeopathy, with a view to choosing a specialisation later. If you have a love of natural therapies and want to immerse yourself in the space and ‘learn it all'...then this is the course for you.

Stage 1...

will provide you with foundational knowledge in nutrition, herbal medicine, homoeopathy and the health sciences.

Your nutrition subjects will enable you to analyse the pros and cons of a range of popular diets such as Paleo, 5:2, Mediterranean, Blood type, GAPS, FODMAP, vegan and vegetarian and many more. You will learn about the pros and cons of the Australian Healthy Eating Guidelines, and why many naturopaths believe they may actually contribute to many of today’s diseases.

This includes:

  • How to analyse the pros and cons of a range of popular diets, such as Paleo, 5:2, Mediterranean, Blood type, GAPS, FODMAP, vegan and vegetarian, and more

  • The pros and cons of the official Australian Healthy Eating Guidelines, why many naturopaths believe they may actually contribute to many of today’s diseases, and simple steps you can take to make healthier choices

  • The difference between a nutritionist and a dietitian

  • Why weight management is such a challenge for so many people, features of the best and worst weight loss diets, and basic strategies for maintaining a healthy weight

  • About detoxing, whether it is needed, and good and fad detox diet ideas

  • The pros and cons of chocolate, caffeine, sugar and salt

  • How your digestion works, and what you can easily do to improve it

  • All about how your body works, from the tiniest molecules all the way up to you as a person

  • How chemistry can be fun...(Really!)

  • The links between what you eat, what you do, and our modern day diseases; and what you can do to live a happier and healthier life

  • And much more!

Your introductory herbal medicine subject covers its origins, East vs West, the different approaches taken by herbalists both today and in the past, as well as early exposure to herbal remedies you can begin using at home straight away.  Other first-year herbal subjects will enable you to start building a comprehensive knowledge of the different herbs and their value.  This will include herbs you may have already heard of such as the ginsengs, Valerian, St Mary’s Thistle, Dandelion, Chamomile, Ginkgo and many more.

In your first Homoeopathy subject, you will learn remedies you can begin to use at home with your family, as well as how Homoeopathy differs from other forms of treatment. This includes the theory behind Homoeopathy and the principles of using it. You will also learn ‘Homoeopathic First Aid’ and remedies you can use for ailments from teething to hangovers!

Underpinning this are the other foundational subjects where you will learn about the body and how it works, and the scientific knowledge you need as a health professional.

Stage 2...

Having learnt how the body works, you will now learn what happens when things go wrong. You will gain a thorough knowledge of diseases and develop the confidence to assess conditions your clients may be experiencing. You will acquire skills to undertake consultations, use basic and effective communication and counselling techniques, and interpret pathology results. Your studies in nutrition will continue with a more in-depth look at vitamins, minerals and other nutrients, and their potential uses.

You will continue to expand your knowledge on the different herbs used by practitioners, the chemistry of the herbs that enable them to have such a powerful effect in the body, and the steps from correct plant identification through to what may end up being taken as a tea or a tablet. You will learn about the different approach Homoeopaths take in consultations, and what guides you to select the right remedy. Your Homoeopathic studies end in this second stage, leaving you with the confidence to use a wide range of remedies in many different conditions.

Stage 3...

builds on everything you have done so far, to put it into practice.

You will be guided through the nutritional and herbal treatment of a wide range of common conditions including allergies, auto-immune conditions, digestive disorders such as IBS and Crohn’s disease, rheumatoid arthritis, skin conditions, headaches and more.

You will also learn about nutritional and herbal treatment in more advanced topics such as fatigue, methylation dysfunction, thyroid conditions, mental health, eating disorders and fertility.

In this final stage you will not just be learning about how to help your clients using nutrition and herbal medicine, but also the skills and knowledge you need to succeed and make a living as a practitioner and businessperson, and how to grow your business bigger than just you.

Your final year is when we recommend you undertake your clinic experience.  The award of this qualification requires 400 hours in a clinic environment under the guidance of an experienced practitioner. This clinical experience will not only allow you to put into practice the skills and knowledge you have acquired during your study, but you also continue to learn from your supervisor.
